Don was born in Natick, MA on October 15, 1926; he was the cherished only son of Louis and Rose Mercier. Don was raised and educated in Chelsea, MA and was a graduate of Chelsea High School with the Class of 1944. Following graduation, Don went to work as a truck driver until he decided to join the Navy and serve the Country during WWII.

Don enlisted in the United States Navy on September 4, 1944 and entered into active service on October 17, 1944. Don served aboard the Cargo ship the USS Roxane AKA-37 in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and was involved in the 1st Occupational Landing in Japan following their surrender during WWII. Don earned several medals and commendations including the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Don was honorably discharged to the U. S. Naval Reserve on June 17, 1946 and returned home to his family.

Following his return home, Don went to work as a Post Office Clerk and married his “beautiful wife” Theresa May Arsenault on June 26, 1949 at the Assumption Church in Chelsea. Don and Theresa moved to Wilmington in Oct 1952 where they bought their first home and started a family. Don was called back to active duty with the Navy and once again had to leave his family behind to serve the Country. Don was assigned to overseas duty and served aboard the USS Macon (CA-132) during the Korean War. On May 9, 1952, Don was again honorably discharged following several years of dedication to the Navy and our Country.

Don returned home to Wilmington and his family and soon became very active in the community. Don and Theresa expanded their family and raised five wonderful children; Carol, Joyce, Bob, Donna, and John. Throughout the years, Don and Theresa had a lot of fun together; they enjoyed their trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City where they would play the slots just to “try their luck”. Don also enjoyed fishing and camping with his family and their adventures in the row boats on Boston Harbor. Don had many great times with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends over the years.

Don was very “work oriented” and was born to be a “protector”; in 1956 he went to work for the Wilmington Police Department as a Patrolman; taking his job very seriously. Don worked hard also attended night school at Northeastern University in Boston where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Science. On February 20, 1967, Don received a letter from Chief Paul Lynch praising him for his work and suggesting a promotion to Sergeant. Don was promoted to Sergeant on March 1, 1967. He continued to work hard, protect the community and proudly served as a Wilmington Police Sergeant until his retirement in 1991.

Although Don was a “no nonsense” type of guy at work he also had a great sense of humor. AKA “Charley” Don will be fondly remembered as hardworking, loyal, honest, and kind; he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A retired teacher from both Broad Ripple and Lawrence Central High Schools, Elinor Rita (Randall) Beaman, 95, passed away quietly at home in the company of her family on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, two days short of her 96th birthday. Born in Indianapolis on March 30, 1921, she was the second child of Albert Vedder and Jessie Belle (Dye) Randall.

Elinor was passionate about English grammar; she taught more than one generation how to diagram sentences, and the derivation of words like “plutocrat.” She loved animals and word puzzles, practiced amateur photography for many years, and was a dedicated do-it-yourselfer, never happier than when working on some construction project around the house. She fed crowds of birds every winter, finished the basement as a playroom and bomb/tornado shelter, and mixed and formed vast quantities of concrete for various projects. Though she didn’t like to cook, she made an awesome peanut brittle.

She fondly remembered her students and was delighted when their paths crossed hers later in life. At Broad Ripple High School from the mid-1940s to 1956 and Lawrence Central High School from1966 to the mid-1980s, she taught English Grammar and Composition, Latin, and Greek and Latin Etymology. In the early ‘40s she briefly taught in Remington, Indiana. She was educated herself at School 70 and Shortridge High School, where she graduated in 1934 and 1938 respectively. At Butler University, she completed a BA in Classical Languages in 1942 and a MEd in 1966.

Her husband, Edgar Eugene (Gene) Beaman, was also a Broad Ripple High School teacher. They married June 19, 1949.

At the age of 90, Elinor moved from Indianapolis to Wilmington, Massachusetts, to be in an assisted living community near one of her daughters.

She is preceded in death by her husband Gene, her brother Albert Willis Randall Sr., and her nephew Paul Randall. She is survived by her daughters Margaret (David) Steup and Rebecca (Gary Maxwell) Beaman, her granddaughter Rosemary Steup, grandson Samuel Steup, and nephew Albert Willis Randall Jr. (Cynthia). All of us will sorely miss her.

Memorial gathering: Sunday, April 23, 2017, 1-2:30pm; Memorial service 2:30-3:00 pm, at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard East Drive, Indianapolis, Indiana. Burial: Monday, April 24, 10am, Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.
