Maureen P. Winnett (Carew) fondly known as “Maura” to her family and friends, age 82, of Wilmington and Falmouth, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on February 11, 2017.
Maura was born on January 24, 1935 in Medford, MA; she was the dear daughter of John and Jane Carew. Maura grew up in a large and loving family on 24 George Street in Medford and was the 7th child out of 10 siblings which consisted of 2 boys and 8 girls. Maura attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School in Medford and graduated from St. Clements High School in Somerville. Maura went on to continue her education at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and graduated with the Class of 1956.
Prior to retiring, Maura had a long and successful career as a labor and delivery room nurse. She first worked at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford, then Choate Hospital in Woburn, and then on to the Winchester Hospital in Winchester, where she helped many local families welcome their babies into the world. Maura was one of the “rare” nurses and she was special; her care and compassion for her patients, their families, and their newborn babies was unwavering. She would always stay calm in rough situations and she treated everyone as if they were her own family; the nursing world was truly blessed to have such an incredible lady.
Maura married the “love of her life” William H. Winnett on September 21, 1957; following their wedding the couple moved to Alexandria, Virginia where they lived for two years and had their first two children Christine and William Jr. Maura and Bill relocated back to Massachusetts; they settled in Wilmington where they went on to welcome six more children for a total of 8; 4 boys and 4 girls.
Maura was a very devoted mother and grandmother; she always enjoyed the time she spent with her family especially the holidays. Maura’s unconditional love and devotion to her family was always evident and she was so proud of each and every one of them.
Upon Retirement, Bill and Maura moved to Falmouth to their home by the sea where they spent many happy years, volunteering for meals on wheels. Maura was a woman of great faith and she and bill were very active communicants of St. Patrick’s Church. Maura sang in the Choir at St. Patrick’s Church, while Bill was a lector, and they both served as Eucharistic ministers. Maura and Bill loved their Cape home where they made many friends and enjoyed their time by the water.
After Bill’s passing in 2013, Maura moved to Brooksby Village in Peabody where she made lots of friends, sang in the choir, and went to shows.
Maura will be fondly remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and an incredible nurse. She was quite a lady who will forever be missed by all who knew and loved her.
