William “Billy” Joseph Heimlich

William “Billy” Joseph Heimlich of West Dennis, formerly of Woburn, died peacefully at his adored home “Elmwood” surrounded by his family on August 22, 2020.

He is the beloved husband of Joan (Tracy) Heimlich and father of five daughters: Jayne (Mark) Conroy of West Dennis; Beth (David) Smith of Wellesley; Julie (Robert) Kiely of Ipswich; Jennifer (Thomas) Conaty of Wilmington, DE; and Ellyn (Robert) Hurd of Marion. He was the proud grandfather of Mildred Conroy, Eli Smith, Eleanor Conroy, Asa Smith, June Kiely, Louise Conaty, Ian Smith, Joan Kiely, Veronica Smith, William “Will” Hurd, Thomas Conaty V, Peter Hurd II, and Frederick “Fritz” Conaty. He was the son of the late Wilhelm Friedrich and Hedwig (Scholz) Heimlich, brother of the late Alexander Heimlich, Oscar Heimlich and Gertrude Uzdavinis.

Billy was born on June 13, 1931 in Woburn, MA attending Saint Charles Borromeo grade school and graduating from Woburn High School. He was a stand-out athlete, and in 1947 was named by the Boston Post, Boston Globe and Boston Traveler to each of their All-Scholastic Football teams. He was also a member of the Massachusetts All Stars Football Team, the Boston Suburban All Stars Football Team and the Boston Globe’s All Class Team. He was inducted into the Woburn High Athletic Hall of Fame. He continued his academic and football career at Kimball Union Academy. He adored his time at Kimball Union. He went on to play football at Georgia Tech, Boston University, and ultimately graduating from Lowell Technical Institute with an engineering degree.

His engineering career was focused on the leather industry and he knew the ins and outs of every tannery in the USA. He was Head Engineer for Murray Leather, John J. Riley Company, and Woburn Machine Co. He also owned and operated Hjorth Lathe and Tool Company. He continued his career at his firm Heimlich Engineering, which allowed him to see and repair the world working and living in China, Bangladesh, Haiti, Mali, Columbia, and Mexico to name a few.

On June 29, 1957 he married the love his life Joan Tracy and they recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Together they had five daughters over the next 20 years. He never missed an opportunity to refer to them as his “five beautiful daughters”. No matter how hard or dirty a job, Bill expected his daughters to pitch in and get it done. Together with Joan, they prioritized education and made many sacrifices to provide the best education to their daughters and grandchildren. Bill was also a former member of the Woburn Board of Aldermen, and a member and past President of the Woburn Kiwanis.

In 1968 he personally built a family cottage in West Dennis, Cape Cod. This decision was one of his best and cemented his love for Cape Cod. He joined the West Dennis Yacht Club (WDYC) where his family learned to sail on their Beetle Cat “Blitz Strahl” (WD100). He volunteered countless hours to the club, serving in every elected capacity including Commodore in 1979. His Steak Barbecue held every August was the hit of the summer. His WDYC friends were family.

In 1982, he purchased his adored property “Elmwood” on Grand Cove. This was a special place for him and over the years it became a family compound as his daughters purchased adjoining properties. He was a visionary gardener and spent countless hours tending to his infamous hedge, sprinkler system and roses. He hosted all five of his daughters’ wedding receptions and many more elaborate parties, including his annual and notorious Cape Cod clambake and his October Pig Roast.

Billy was an inventor, an engineer and an insatiable seeker of knowledge. He was a true Renaissance man. His curiosity was epic and he had an impressive aptitude for solving problems big and small. In the 1960s, he built a rope tow and an electronic race timer for a small ski hill in Woburn MA, so that children in the community could learn to ski and compete. In the 1970s, he received a call by a complete stranger in the middle of the night to fix the failed tank pumps at the New England Aquarium. He didn’t hesitate. Not only did he save the sea life at the aquarium, he brought along his school age daughters because he never missed an opportunity for them to learn. If a machine broke at a tannery anywhere in the world, chances are Bill Heimlich would be called in to fix it.

His work ethic was unparalleled and his physical strength superhuman. His most exceptional talent was connecting with people and forging lifelong trusted friendships throughout the world. He was the man who understood how everything worked and could design, build, and rebuild anything. Even in later years, he couldn’t be stopped. His golf cart had no boundaries and it was always welcome. Everyone wanted just a piece of his vast knowledge. He treated everyone with respect and no one was beneath him. He loved to ask questions. He was a champion of gender equality, was never afraid to speak his mind, including his strong political opinions, and he loved a good argument. He was a risk taker and fearless. He tirelessly taught his five daughters and thirteen grandchildren these values.

Above all, Billy was a giver. He would always accept a challenge to take on seemingly impossible tasks and find creative solutions. He never discussed how he helped others but you would always hear stories of his selfless acts. As a young boy in Woburn, he risked his life by running into the burning Greek Orthodox Church to save the contents of the tabernacle. He had a rare form of blood and was a lifelong blood donor. And he always made the most of his work travels. If he happened to be in a city or town where one of his friends’ aging parents lived, he would always drop by for a visit. He was a weekly food donor to homeless shelters across New England. If something needed doing, he just did it.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you carry forward Billy’s greatest gifts – cherish your family and friends, always think before you speak, open your home to all, strive to understand how things work, appreciate the wonder of our world, and drink a Moxie. www.nicholsfuneralhome.com

Alison M. O’Neil

Alison M. O’Neil, age 42, a life-long resident of Stoneham, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington.

Alison was born on October 13, 1977, in Melrose, MA; she was raised in Stoneham and was part of a large and loving family. Alison attended Stoneham Public School and was a graduate of Stoneham High School with the Class of 1996.

Alison’s family was her world; she loved to surprise them with gifts, trips or something special just to see them smile and make them so happy. Alison was a wonderful daughter, sister and auntie but her greatest role was “Mom” to her two beautiful children Andrew and Caera. They were the light of her life, her side kicks and her reason for living; she just adored them with all her heart. Alison was the first to get involved and help anyone in the family; if you needed something she was right there, if you hurt she hurt right along with you and she made it her business to keep track and make sure everyone was alright. She was the “Keeper of the Family” in every sense.

Alison was always upbeat and positive; she loved to have fun. Alison enjoyed listening to her Country Music, she liked going to the beach, fishing and was in awe of Nature and all the beauty it provided. She looked forward to heading out on her road trips especially to Tennessee to visit family, her trips to the Casino and her occasional scratch tickets just to try “her luck”. Alison’s daily adventures included her trips to Dunkin’s for coffee with her friends just to socialize and catch up and her shopping trips and long walks with her “other half” Caera.

Alison was “one of a kind” with a larger than life personality, a beautiful heart and a zest for life. She was a “social butterfly” who knew everyone by name and had the ability to make everyone around her feel special. Alison was a CNA and home health aide by trade but her ability to care for others went way beyond that; she was truly a guardian angel to many. Alison went out of her way to do for others; she was never judgmental and showered everyone with unconditional love and affection.
Alison was a beautiful person inside and out; she was so loved and will forever be missed.

Alison was the devoted mother of Andrew and Caera O’Neil both of Stoneham, cherished daughter of Janis (Iovanna) Hall and the late Albert Hall of Stoneham, she was the beloved sister of Melissa Hall and George Jackson of North Andover, Pam Meuse and husband Steve of Methuen and Sheila Hall of Stoneham. Loving “Auntie” of Amanda, Matt, Clay, Nick, Adam, Samantha, Emily, Ben and “Great Auntie” of Sean Patrick, Adrianna, Savannah, Stetson, Grace and Greyson. Alison is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA. for Visiting Hours on Friday, September 4th from 3:00-6:00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Alison’s Life at 6:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Alison’s memory to the Susan G. Komen to help fight Breast Cancer, P. O. Box 127, Newton, MA 02468. www.nicholsfuneralhome.com

Trooper 1st Class Thomas W. Devlin, MSP

Thomas William Devlin, Massachusetts State Trooper 1st Class, of Wilmington, passed away at his home on September 3, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. Tom was born December 18, 1961 in Boston, and was raised in Lexington, the youngest of seven children. He was a member of the 66th RTT graduating from the State Police Academy on December 6, 1985.

Tom trained with SP Grafton and went on to patrol SP Weston, SP Framingham, and SP Andover. His last assignment was with SP Concord. Throughout his career, he patrolled every highway and secondary roadway in Eastern Massachusetts. Tom earned the Medal of Lifesaving in 1999, State Police Troop Commendation in 2004, and the State Police Division Commendation in 2015. While serving the citizens of the Commonwealth, Tom sustained injuries in the line of duty on July 26, 2018. On September 3, 2020, he succumbed to those injuries.

An illustrious 35-year career with the Massachusetts State Police is why most know Thomas Devlin’s name. During these 35 years, he was responsible for saving multiple lives, and has received countless accolades and honors to commend his performance. However, as close friends and family know, his job was far from the top of the list of reasons why he was an incredible man of God, husband, father, and citizen. Tommy, as he was affectionately called, was the model of selflessness and sacrifice. He would willingly and generously give endless time, money, and resources to those that he loved, without ever asking for anything in return. His days revolved around time with family, despite a typical work schedule of 60-70 hours a week. He adored his wife of 27 years, Nancy, and loved nothing more than to spend time with her in the home that they built together over the years. They shared this space with their four children Matthew, Rachel, Paul, Hannah, and fully embraced the chaos that a big family brings. Time spent there took the form of doing the things that he loved with the people he loved, including chopping firewood out back behind his house, watching movies with his boys, snuggling with his dog Sheena, listening to Mumford and Sons, and sitting on his favorite recliner on the porch. None of these activities were without laughter, and Tom loved to laugh. He had a smile that is impossible to forget and found joy in making others laugh as well, even if by way of a “dad joke.” His sense of humor was one of his best qualities and helped to carry him through whatever life would throw at him. This remained constant even after he was hit on the highway on July 26, 2018.

Tom was conducting a routine traffic stop at the end of his patrol shift on Route 3 in Billerica when he was struck by a motorist who had failed to move over and eventually drifted to pin him against the car he had pulled over. He suffered numerous injuries internally and externally, and over the course of the past two years, had undergone six major surgeries to attempt to reconcile them. Tom leaned heavily on his family during this time as well as his strong faith in God. He encouraged those around him to do the same and was constantly pointing others back to their Creator. His life became a testament to faithfulness and mercy, and he remained meek in the face of great pain. Never once complaining or feeling sorry for himself, he took everything in great stride, and quickly gained the respect of every doctor or medical staff he came in contact with. His kindness and gentleness were apparent a mile away, and he became a favorite patient everywhere he went.

Eventually, Tom’s body tired of the surgeries and constant battle to regain health. He returned home to spend his last days with the people he loved the most in the place he loved the most. Surrounded by his four beautiful children and devoted wife, Thomas Devlin passed on Thursday, September 3rd. It was fitting that the house he had built on peace and safety was where he found both of those things at last.

His family is devastated by the senseless loss but finds solace in the fact that he is no longer in pain and has been fully healed by the loving hands of Christ. The outpouring of support and stories from those who had met Tom over the years inspires them to keep his legacy alive by mirroring everything that made him who he was; to work hard without seeking recognition, place others before yourself, and lead with a quiet spirit that will leave a lasting impression. His smile, laughter, and character will be sorely missed by all who were lucky enough to experience them. Above all else, he was an incredible husband, father, brother, uncle, and son; kind, resourceful, patient, driven, and dedicated. His formidable career on the Massachusetts State Police reflected each of these traits all the more.

Tom was the beloved husband and best friend of Nancy Elaine (Peterson) Devlin, devoted father of Matthew William Devlin, Rachel Claire Devlin, Paul Thomas Devlin and Hannah Elaine Devlin, all of Wilmington. Cherished son of the late Paul V. and the late Mary B. (Melly) Devlin. Devoted brother of Paul Devlin of Lexington, Mary Fredrickson & husband Peter of South Weymouth, Eileen MacPherson & husband Keith of Waltham, Kathleen Devlin of Wells, ME, Patricia Puopolo husband Francis of Georgetown, and Lt. James Devlin, MSP of Worcester. Treasured brother-in-law of Stephen & Jeanne Peterson, Robert & Carla Peterson, James & Kimberly Peterson, Cynthia & Kevin Kilday, all of Wilmington, and Michael & Susan Peterson of Westford. Tom is further survived by scores of nieces, nephews, friends, and fellow troopers and police officers who adored him.

Family and friends are invited to Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte.62), Wilmington on Thursday, September 10th from 4:00-8:00 P.M. A Celebration of Trooper Thomas Devlin’s life will take place on Friday, September 11th at noon on the Wilmington High School Field, Wildwood Street, Wilmington. Interment follow at Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
