Gerriann (Reddington) Lydon

Gerriann Lydon (Reddington), age 77, of Wilmington and South Boston, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on May 23, 2017.

Gerriann arrived on Christmas Day in 1939; she was the daughter of the late David and Josephine (Sparrow) Reddington. Gerriann was raised in South Boston and was a graduate of South Boston High School. Gerriann was a “Southie” girl through and through. Walks on Carson beach and Castle Island were amongst her favorite things to do. She was proud of her heritage, it taught her to be a person of strength, loyalty, courage and unconditional love, all characteristics that helped her throughout her life.

Through great determination and hard work, Gerriann went on to earn a degree from Middlesex Community College in Bedford. She retired from her position as Executive Secretary at Fay, Spofford & Thorndike in Burlington where she excelled in her field. Gerriann’s work ethic and dedication to her job did not go unnoticed; she was definitely a favorite among her co-workers.

Gerriann worked hard to provide for her family; she was a single mother who proudly raised five children. Gerriann’s unconditional love and support along with guidance and discipline carved her family into the wonderful adults that they have become. Gerriann raised her family in Southie before moving them to the suburbs of Bedford and finally settling in Wilmington. When Gerriann moved to the suburbs she noticed that it was far different than living in the city; no public transportation and the streets were very quiet at night. This was far different than what she was used to but she forged through to do what she thought was best for her children. During these times, Gerriann took up reading and gardening. She loved the outdoors and being outside enjoying the sunlight and all the nature that surrounded her. Gerriann created beautiful flower gardens throughout her life that were always bright and cheery; she loved to “dig in the dirt”. Gerriann also enjoyed bird watching and always had to have her bird feeders full.

As years passed and her grandchildren came along, her love of nature was something she continued to share with them. Grandma took on a new role that she cherished, calling them all her “little darlings”. Gerriann’s grandchildren were her pride and joy; she treasured the times she spent at their school s, sporting events, and movies, or their many sleepovers and dinners at “Grandma’s House”. These were times that have created many happy memories for Gerriann’s family to share for years to come. Gerriann lit up when she spoke of each and every one of her grandchildren; they were all so special to her.

Gerriann was a very caring woman and an excellent judge of character; she called “a spade a spade” and she always looked for the good in others. Gerriann expected people to be hard working, loyal, honest, and kind; these were traits she displayed every day of her life to those around her. Gerriann’s faith, strength and grace helped her through so many tough times in her life. She was truly one of a kind and a beautiful lady inside and out. Gerriann will always be in the hearts of those she loved and those who loved her. She will forever be missed.

Gerriann was the devoted mother of Steve, Mark, Scott, Jennifer and John Lydon, loving grandmother of Sydney, Jacob, Matthew, Gabriel, Ethan, Lance and Luke. Dear sister of Jackie Gordon, Monte Reddington, Jeanne Smith and the late Sheila Richards. Gerriann is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, June 3rd at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Visiting Hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, June 2nd from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
