Doris A. Balestrieri (Walsh), age 93, a long-time resident of Woburn, formerly of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on November 28, 2020.

Doris was born on January 15, 1927, in Somerville, MA; she was the dear daughter of the late Clayton Walsh and Alice (Doucette) Seymour. Doris was raised and educated in Wilmington and a graduate of Wilmington High School.

As a young lady, Doris worked for McLaughlin Pharmacy in Wilmington and throughout most of her career she was an electronics supervisor for the Sylvania and GTE Companies. Doris had a great work ethic and a wonderful personality; she made many long-time friends with her co-workers and they became her extended family.

Doris married “the love of her life” Ernie Balestrieri on July 15, 1945; the couple built their dream home and moved to Woburn in 1947 to the “Balestrieri Compound” where they were surrounded by family, friends and lots of love. To say Doris was “family oriented” was an understatement; she showered her family with love, compassion and understanding. She was never judgmental towards anyone and was always there to lend a hand or an ear to anyone in need. Doris was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and a great homemaker. Doris enjoyed always having family around and she loved to host many family parties, special celebrations and holidays throughout the years. Doris was not only a wonderful mother to her own children she also treated her extended family of nieces and nephews as her own; she loved spending time with all of them. When Doris became a “Nana” and then a “Great-Nana” her life became even more full; she adored her grandchildren and looked forward to spending time with them and celebrating all of their special milestones.

Family was everything to Doris; she and “her Ernie” were like two peas in a pod and they did everything together. Doris looked forward to their trips to Hampton Beach every summer, day trip and long rides through New Hampshire, Maine and Cape Cod. They also enjoyed traveling to the Virgin Islands, Hawaii and their many trips to California to visit with Uncle George. Doris had an endearing personality that allowed her to meet new people and make friends wherever her travels took her.

Doris and Ernie also had their daily routine of heading to McDonald’s in Wilmington where they would have coffee with their friends, discuss current events or just talk about their families. The couple saved their Friday evenings for their favorite past time of dancing and boy could they dance. Doris and Ernie would head out with their family and friends to the St. Anthony Club or other dance clubs to hit the floor, show their moves and have a great time.

Doris had many talents; she was an excellent seamstress, knitter, quilter and crafter. Doris sewed for her family and friends, making beautiful dresses, clothes and drapes. Doris sewed Baptismal Bibs for the babies that were Christened at St. Anthony’s Parish in Woburn; mementos that were treasured by their families. Doris knitted blankets and quilts as special gifts for her family and friends; all made with love and will be treasured for a life time.

Doris was a woman of great faith and an active communicant of St. Anthony’s Parish in Woburn for many, many years. Doris was active in the Ladies Sodality, fundraising events and Church Bazaar’s throughout the years. She and Ernie loved their Parish and would do anything to help in any way.

Doris will be fondly remembered as “quite a lady”; kind, caring, friendly and helpful. Doris went out of her way to help anyone in need, never expecting anything in return. She had an endearing personality and made everyone around her feel loved. Doris had a great laugh, beautiful smile and a warm hug for all. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Doris was the beloved wife of 72 years to the late Ernest “Sparrow” Balestrieri, devoted mother of Sandy A. (Balestrieri) LaFontaine & her late husband Eugene “Tiny” LaFontaine of Woburn, the late Deborah A. (Balestrieri) Sylvester and Tom Concannon and his wife Linette of Florida. Loving “Nana” of Paul LaFontaine and his wife Lenor, Donald LaFontaine and his wife Christine, Sharona Sylvester and her companion Garrett and her great-grandchildren Jaidyn, Kiley, Zach, Mason and Levi. Dear daughter of the late Clayton Walsh and Alice (Doucette) and Clayton Seymour, sister of the late Robert Walsh and his late wife Ruth. Doris is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law as well as her many nieces, nephews and their families.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Doris’ memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.

Louisa D. “Chickie” Selig

On Christmas Eve (her favorite holiday) at 12noon on the dot the incredibly resilient Louisa “Chickie” Selig, 68 of Tewksbury, formerly Somerville, went to be with the Lord after a several month long battle with sepsis. Loving wife of 44 years to Ronald of Tewksbury, perfect mother to the luckiest kids in the world; Samantha and Derek also of Tewksbury and sister in law to Warren Selig of Ridge Manor, FL and sister-in-law to Debby Selig of Wilmington, MA. She is preceded in death by her parents Leo and Dorothy Ciccolo and her in-laws, Warren and Eleanor Selig as well as her brother-in-law Richie of Wilmington, MA and her sister-in-law Roma Berry of Dundee, MI. Louisa is also survived by many friends and family all around the world.

Anyone who knew her just loved her – she was the kind of person that lit up every room she entered, talked to every person she encountered and not just learned their story but remembered them for years to come. She was sassy and hilarious – a true ray of sunshine. She made you feel special just for knowing her.

She had many jobs in her lifetime (first female slitter at BASF, insurance claims processor, admin at Salad House, dump truck driver, co-owner of Sassy Sparkles) but the one she treasured most was her role as a domestic engineer; caring for her parents, in-laws and children as well as so many “adopted” children for nearly 40 years. She loved rap music (especially Dr. Dre and DMX), Christmas cartoons, rides to the beach, Starbucks peppermint hot chocolate, trips to California and was happiest in her “Mom uniform” – black sweatshirt and black yoga pants – with her perfectly highlighted hair courtesy of the best hair dresser, Jen Johnson of Billerica.

Her family would like to extend the sincerest thank you to the wonderful people that cared for her over the last several months at Lahey Hospital in Burlington (including the outstanding nurses of 6East and 5Central ICU!), Fresenius Kidney Care Stoneham (including her friends Catherine, Lexi, Domenic and Sarah) and the entire amazing staff at AdviniaCare in Wilmington. You cared for our mom like she was your own and we will forever be grateful for that!

“Grief is like the ocean; it comes in waves, ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim.”

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank, 735 Broadway St., Lowell, MA 01854 – Louisa was a quintessential Sicilian mom and loved to feed people!

Prior to retiring, John, worked as a salesman for several Construction Equipment Companies but for many years he worked selling John Deere construction equipment. John’s outgoing personality and vast knowledge of his job made him a favorite among his clients as well as his co-workers.

John was a giver of his time and talents to help others; he was a member of the Friendship Lodge of Masons for over 70 years and a Shriner. Following graduation, he attended Middlesex Community College before transferring to Berkley College of Music where he earned an associates degree in music. Gary was a talented musician, who had great vocalist skills and played a “mean” guitar. Gary and his friends had a band that played at local clubs where others could sit and enjoy “real” music.

Gary worked hard to provide for his family; for many years he was employed as a maintenance engineer for the Amtrak Company. Gary was very friendly and outgoing, he made many life-long friends at work and was a dedicated employee for many years before retiring in 2015.

They were wonderful parents and could always be seen at countless sporting events, school events or any other thing their boys were involved in. Gary and Trisha had an “open door policy” at their home, everyone was welcomed, fed and made to feel loved. Many wonderful memories were made at the Senarian Household where they celebrated lots of holidays, birthdays and cookouts for the boys and all of their friends.

Gary was very sociable; he could work a room and make friends with everyone there. He looked forward to the times he spent with his friends at poker tournaments, fishing expeditions, especially on Zack’s boat, or just sitting in the driveway chatting with Jimmy, Philip or his neighbors. Gary had a magnetic personality and instantly made everyone feel special. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a “character” who loved to make people laugh.

Family was most important to Gary; he showered them with unconditional love and devotion. Gary took special care of his wife, Trisha, as she battled cancer and her health declined; he never left her side and made her feel safe and loved. Gary also devoted his time to his boys and especially enjoyed his time with his grandchildren. He had a special bond with his cousins, who were more like brothers and sisters.
