Ruth I. Gilbert (Haycox), age 91, of Wilmington, died peacefully on September 27, 2016, at home surrounded by her loving family.
Ruth was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on August 7, 1925; she was the dear daughter of the late Earnest and Jean (Carey) Haycox. Ruth was raised and educated in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia where she still has a large extended family.
Ruth married “the love of her life” Lewis R. Gilbert on December 7, 1941; the couple moved to Wilmington in 1952 and in 1955 they built their own home in Wilmington where they raised their two sons. Ruth loved her home and she always had an “open door” policy for family and friends. Ruth was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; she looked forward to babysitting and helped to raise her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-granddaughter. Ruth loved her family unconditionally, she would do anything to help them out, and she was very proud of all of their accomplishments.
Ruth was known to be an avid sports fan; she loved to follow the Boston Bruins, New England Patriots, but her favorite was the Boston Red Sox.
In her spare time, Ruth enjoyed knitting; she made many special afghans, sweaters, hats, and gloves, that she shared with her family. Those were special gifts that will be treasured for generations to come.
Ruth will be fondly remembered for her kind and caring ways; she was a very special lady who will be forever loved and missed by all.
Ruth was the beloved wife of the late Lewis R. Gilbert, devoted mother of Richard L. Gilbert of Shamokin, PA and Robert H. Gilbert & wife Theresa of Wilmington. Proud “Nana” of Kathleen Gilbert, Diana Sironi & husband Eric, Lisa Valente, Robert Gilbert, Michael Gilbert & wife Sharleen, Kristina Gilbert & Mark, “Great-Nana” of Kayla, Scott, Brad, Cameron, Thomas, Mark, Jocelyn, Roman, Quinn, and Great-Great-Nana of Brooklyn. Cherished daughter of the late Earnest & Jean (Carey) Haycox, dear sister of Wilma Bowles, Gerald Haycox & wife Mona, sister-in-law of Rita Haycox all of Canada.
Family & friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Monday, October 3rd for Visitation from 9:00-11:00 a.m. immediately followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. Interment Wildwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in Ruth’s memory may be made to VNA Hospice Care, 100 Trade Center Suite G-500, Woburn, MA 01801.
